Marc SADLER was born in Innsbrьck (Austria), is a French citizen, and currently lives in Milan (Italy). He obtained a degree at “E.N.S.A.D.” (Paris) in 1968, and was awarded the Brook Stevens design prize the same year. Already in 1968, he was a member of Design Center 1 (Paris), the first organized French group of designers. In 1970, he joined the France Design group (working in several sectors in France), although he continued his own research and experimentation on plastic materials and their possible applications. It was precisely due to one of his experimental projects (a ski-boot in thermoplastic material) that he began to work in the sports sector and, in 1971, began work in Italy with Caber, for which he later patented the system of symmetric shell which was the most successful ski-boot for several years. Due to increasingly closer relations with Italian companies, at Asolo (north-east Italy) he opened a studio equipped with CAD and CAM 3D, and organized an office with staff specialized in modelling and technical development. This allowed him to offer his customers an “all-inclusive” package of services, from conception and design to product development. After setting up branches in New York, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Venice, he has recently established offices in Milan. Sportswear design and collaboration with leading international companies have given Sadler extensive experience and knowledge of materials and working technologies. His work in the sports sector, in which research and experimentation on new materials and productive processes are advanced, has also allowed him to export his experience to other sectors where design in the classic sense has been established for longer. Today, Sadler is an esteemed designer for leading companies in the sector of furnishings, large and small electric domestic appliances, lighting, and more technical products. In the sports sector, he has worked for some companies for more than ten years, confirming his singular capacity to understand and assimilate various productive technologies and adapting them to new requirements. He also teaches in design schools and universities, both in Italy and abroad (Domus Academy, Milan; Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan; Politecnico di Milano; Strate Collиge and Ensci les Ateliers, Paris; Pфle de Plasturgie, Oyonnax; Design Labour, Bremerhaven; Ecole Supйrieure d’Art, Nancy; Royal College of Art, London, etc.). Recognitions include: DESIGN PLUS (Frankfurt) for the “Apotheos” shower cabin designed for Domino-Albatros (1995); COMPASSO D’ORO (Golden Compass) for the soft lamp "Drop" designed for Flos-Arteluce (1995); AUSZEICHNUNG FUR GUTES DESIGN at the Industrie Forum Design, Hanover, for the “Drop 2” soft lamp (1996). CREATEUR DE L’ANNEE at the Salon du Meuble, Paris (1997); COMPASSO D’ORO ADI for the lamps in fiberglass and carbon “Tite and Mite” for Foscarini (Murano, Venice). DESIGN PLUS (Frankfurt) for the kitchen scale "Grammy" for F.lli Guzzini (2001); In 1998, New York’s M.O.M.A. included his “Motorcyclist’s Back Protector” (designed for Dainese) in its permanent collection (it had been exhibited in “Mutant Materials in Contemporary and Design”). Among the customers in the sports field there are multinational enterprises such as Nike, Reebok, Adidas, Foot Locker, Pume, as well as other important italian and europeam brands such as Ellesse, Bailo, Belfe, Nordica, Dolomite, Lotto, Lange, Salomon, Sergio Tacchini and more. Particularly relevant is the almost twenty year cooperation with Dainese, the worldwide leader in the technical and protective wear for motorcycle and recently for many "active" sports. A new project with Aprilia, an important italian producer of scooters and motorcycles is in progress. In the design furniture (including lighting and bathroom), the most important co-operations concern Cassina, Tecno, Boffi, Flos, Fiam, Foscarini, the new division Even of Open Kristallux (bathroom accessories), the Kleis division of RDS handles. New projects are also "under construction" with Kartell, Magis, Segis, iGuzzini. If compared to the most traditional "design", there are even "atypical" collaborations as the case of ABB Sace, the multinational company in the field of electrical devices; for ABB Sace Sadler has designed a system of modular equipments to meet all installation requirements.
